What should I bring on a fishing charter?

Please bring sunscreen that is NON-SPRAY, as spray sunscreen can harm the exterior of the boat. You may bring whatever food and drinks you would like, but I will have bottled water provided for you on the boat. Consider bringing a rain jacket/windbreaker just in case along with a hat and sunglasses.

Do we need to bring a cooler?

Not necessarily, we will have coolers on the boat with ice and water provided. You may bring a small cooler on the boat if you would like to but please remember space is limited.

Can we keep the fish we catch?

At Southern Roots Fishing Charters we fish for sport! We do our best to catch and release everything safely to help preserve our fishery for the years and generations to come.

Do we need a fishing license?

No, the boat is licensed and has everyone on board covered.

Are your fishing charters family friendly?

Yes. Southern Roots Fishing specializes in family friendly fishing charters on Hilton Head. Kids, beginners, and experienced anglers are all welcome. Our goal is to provide a relaxed and fun fishing experience while targeting local species like redfish and trout.

Is fishing gear provided on the boat?

Yes, all of the fishing rods and reels will be provided on the boat. Bait will either be on the boat or we will catch it quickly on our way to our first spot. The fishing vessel is equipped with life jackets and all other required safety gear.

What fish can you catch in Hilton Head?

Hilton Head Island offers excellent inshore fishing year round. On our charters we commonly target redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and seasonal sharks. Depending on the time of year we may also catch jack crevalle, ladyfish, black drum, and other coastal species in the creeks, rivers, and nearshore waters around Hilton Head. How far do we go?

We stay either in-shore or near shore depending on the time, weather, and needs of our clients. We try to tailor our trips to you and your family the best we can.

How early should we arrive for our trip?

Make sure you get to Harbour Town at least 20-30 minutes before your trip to find parking and have your directions squared away the night before to avoid any hiccups the day of.

Is tipping customary?

Yes, typically a 15%-20% tip is customary in this industry.

How many people can we bring on the boat?

Anywhere from 1-4 people can be accommodated on our boat. In some cases, 5 total can be included if you have a family with small children. This is to ensure a safe and comfortable ride on our boat and keeping well within the weight limits the boat is certified for.

Where do your fishing charters leave from?

All Southern Roots Fishing charters depart from Harbour Town Marina inside Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island. Harbour Town provides easy access to some of the best inshore fishing waters in the Lowcountry including Calibogue Sound, Broad Creek, and nearby tidal creeks.

What is the best time of year to fish Hilton Head?

Fishing is good year round on Hilton Head Island. Spring and fall are excellent for redfish and trout, summer offers great shark fishing opportunities, and winter can provide excellent sight fishing for redfish in shallow water.
