Hilton Head Fishing Report
Hilton Head Fishing Report – May 1, 2026
Fishing around Hilton Head Island continues to improve as we move out of spring and into early summer patterns. The inshore bite has been steady, and we’ve been seeing a great mix of species, making for fun and productive trips.
Redfish have been the most consistent target lately, with plenty of quality fish coming from the inshore creeks and flats. Black drum are still around in good numbers, and we’ve been picking up speckled sea trout when the tides line up right. We’re also starting to see flounder here and there, and the first sharks of the season are beginning to show up, which always adds some excitement—especially for families and kids.
Fishing overall has been steady. Some days are better than others, and it can be a bit tide-dependent this time of year, but the trend is definitely improving week by week. Most trips have been producing a solid mixed bag, with good action and a variety of species.
As we head into the next couple of months, things are only going to get better. Redfish should remain strong, the trout bite will continue to improve, and shark fishing will really start heating up. We’ll also begin spending more time around nearshore reefs and harbor areas as conditions allow.
For anglers looking for a more serious, guided fishing experience, this is the time of year to start thinking about longer trips. As water temperatures rise, we’ll begin targeting species like cobia, jack crevalle, and tarpon as they move into the area. These trips typically require more time on the water and a more focused game plan, but they can offer some of the most exciting fishing of the year.
Tarpon season is right around the corner and should start picking up within the next month. If that’s something you’ve been wanting to check off your list, booking a longer trip gives us the best opportunity to find and target them effectively.
Tides are a big factor this time of year, and they can play a major role in how we approach each trip depending on what we’re targeting. Whether you’re looking for steady action inshore or a more specialized trip targeting larger species, we can adjust the plan to match conditions.
Coming out of spring break, we’ve seen a mix of families and more serious anglers, and as we move into summer, demand is continuing to build.
Our 4 to 5 hour inshore charters remain the most popular option and are perfect for families and groups looking to catch fish and have a great time on the water. For those looking to target specific species like tarpon, cobia, or jacks, we recommend booking a longer trip to give us the time needed to maximize your chances.
If you’re looking for a Hilton Head fishing charter or guided fishing trip, now is a great time to get on the water as the bite continues to improve and summer dates begin to fill up.
Tight lines,
Captain Matt
